Your Oral Health Checklist During Pregnancy

To help you maintain the best oral health possible during your pregnancy, our team at Smiles Dental recommends that you do the following things:

Keep up on oral hygiene
Please brush your teeth twice a day, floss your smile once a day, and rinse your mouth daily. Doing these things will help you deeply clean your smile on a regular basis and maintain a successful oral health. As you brush, floss, and rinse, we recommend that you use the right tools, which are products that have been approved by the American Dental Association. That way, your smile is properly cared for.

Talk to your dentist
When you come into our office for your six month checkup, please remember to tell our team about your pregnancy and about any medications you are taking. Then, we can treat your smile accordingly and can look for specific dental issues that come along with pregnancy.

Watch for changes in the mouth
There are many oral health issues that can arise during pregnancy, like pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy tumors, so please watch for any changes in your mouth. Some changes might be red, bleeding, or swollen gums or even red, raspberry-like sores on the surfaces of your gums.

Have a healthy diet
Do your best to eat healthy foods and to incorporate more nutrients into your diet, like vitamins A, C, and D as well as protein, calcium, and phosphorus. We also ask that you avoid snacking all day and you try to eat more fruits, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt.

Deal with morning sickness
If you frequently vomit, your smile is prone to tooth decay. The acid in the vomit tends to attack the smile and erode the tooth enamel. So, to control the oral acid, please rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda and water.
